Nuxeo 5: the Next Generation ECM solution

What is Nuxeo 5?

Nuxeo 5 is a robust, extensible, global, standards-based Enterprise Content Management (ECM) solution available as Open Source Software (OSS). Nuxeo 5 is based on other open source software, notably from the Apache Foundation, the JBoss Group (a division of Red Hat) and the Eclipse Foundation, and developed in a truly open manner.

What can I do with it?

Nuxeo 5 is designed to enable building and running a large range of applications within the ECM scope, closely matching enterprises’ needs from the server to the desktop. Nuxeo 5 is a global solution ready to take on challenges of this new era of information management (Web 2.0, increasing quantity of digital information, lots of emails, online/offline, mobility, etc.).

Nuxeo 5 addresses the full range of the ECM scope, specifically:

The Nuxeo 5 global solution is available in two editions that share components but address different targets:

• Nuxeo Enterprise Platform (EP) is a server-side platform (accessible from web or rich clients) to create large ECM applications (ex: heavy document management, federal collaboration platform, etc.).
• Nuxeo Rich Client Platform (RCP) is a framework, based on Eclipse RCP and Microsoft® Office™, to create rich client (desktop) applications related to document management or collaboration.

Those editions share the core components and offer applicative components dedicated to their target/business. Of course, Nuxeo RCP includes everything required to work seamlessly with Nuxeo EP.

What technology does it use?

Nuxeo 5 is built on modern open source Java 5 and Java EE 5 technologies, including: the Apache Jackrabbit JCR, the JBoss application server, JBoss Seam, jBPM, JBoss Rules, JSF, EJB3, etc.

It is developed using the finest developers tools around, including:

• Development environments: mostly Eclipse IDE (including many additional plugins like TPTP, Checkstyle, FindBugs, etc.) and IntelliJ IDEA (note: free licenses to IDEA graciously donated by Jetbrains).
• Profiler: the YourKit Java Profiler (thanks to a free license generously donated by YourKit LLC).
• Dependency management, build, deploy: Maven (it does everything except for the coffee).
• Continuous integration and testing: both Hudson (open source software developed by Sun) and Teamcity (thanks again to a free license donated by JetBrains).
• Bug tracking: Jira (we're paying for this one, because we're also using it for our professional support).

Is it really open source?

Yes it is. It is licensed under the LGPL (the same license used by JBoss), which means that you are free to reuse the Nuxeo components in your own applications, even if they are not open source.

Who develops Nuxeo 5?

Nuxeo 5 is developed by the Nuxeo SAS company and a community of co-developers and contributors.

This is a team with more than 5 years creating ECM platforms on top of various open source technologies. Now we're combining the ECM knowledge and Java experience of the different team members to create the best open source ECM platform on the market.
